OSHA 10 Hour General Industry Safety Training Program

The 10 hour General Industry Training Program was designed by OSHA as an orientation to workplace health and safety for those working in general industry. This course provides new and entry level workers with a broad awareness on recognizing and preventing hazards most commonly found on a general industry work site. Participants ill be introduced to OSHA and its policies and standards wit emphasis on safe work practices covered under OSHA Standards for General Industry found in 29 CFR 1910.

Who should take this course

OSHA uses the term "general industry" to refer to all industries not included in agriculture, construction or maritime. This training is recommended for:

OSHA 10 Topics

  1. Mandatory - 7 hours
    1. Introduction to OSHA - 2 hours
      1. OSHA has required training content including: worker's rights, employer responsibilities and how to file a complaint, worker safety and health resources, samples of weekly fatality and catastrophe reports, material safety data sheets and the OSHA Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses.
    2. Walking and Working Surfaces, including fall protection - 1 hour.
    3. Exit Routes, Emergency Action Plans, Fire Prevention Plans, and Fire Protection - 1 hour.
    4. Electrical - 1 hour.
    5. Personal Protective Equipment - 1 hour.
    6. Hazard Communication - 1 hour.
  2. Elective - 2 hours. At least two hours of training must be presented on the following topics. At least two topics must be presented. The minimum length of any topic is one-half hour.
    1. Hazardous Materials
    2. Materials Handling
    3. Machine Guarding
    4. Introduction to Industrial Hygiene
    5. Bloodborne Pathogens
    6. Ergonomics
    7. Safety and Health Program
    8. Fall Protection
  3. Option 1 Hour may be used to teach other general industry hazards or policies and/or expand on the mandatory or elective topics.

The OSHA 10 Hour General Industry Course takes place over 2 consecutive days. A test will be given on the final day. Participants will receive an HP&P wallet card and certificate upon completion of the 10 Hour training. Receipt of the US Dept. of Labor OSHA 10 Hour card takes approximately 4-6 weeks after course completion.
